About Us

The St. Croix Rowing Club (SCRC) is located in the city of Hudson, Wisconsin on the shore of the St. Croix River, a National Scenic Riverway.  The club is organized as a nonprofit entity and is exclusively focused on sculling, not sweep rowing. The club provides both recreational and competitive rowing opportunities for adults.

Due to our small size we do not offer youth programs.  There are youth programs in the Twin Cities metro area offered by the Minnesota Boat Club in St. Paul, the Minneapolis Rowing Club, the Long Lake Rowing Club, and Twin Cities Youth Rowing.

The purpose of our club is to promote and educate people about rowing, to be good environmental stewards of the St. Croix River, and to provide a range of rowing opportunities for our members.

We welcome new members, regardless of your level of prior rowing experience. Each year we offer a Learn to Row class for up to 10 new rowers.  We can also create an opportunity for a private or semi-private, single lesson to introduce you to the sport of rowing on the beautiful St. Croix River.

Prospective new members who have prior rowing experience are also welcome.  Please contact us at LearnToRow@stcroixrowing.org

Club History
In the summer of 1999, rowing enthusiasts Hal and Kathy Barnes, Tom Palmer, and Maynard Schultz began efforts to start a rowing club on the St. Croix River. They used their own boats to offer rides to passers-by at the boat landing in Hudson and ended the season with two more members.  The club’s biggest obstacle was finding a boathouse.

In 2001, the first lessons were offered at Steamboat Park in Afton, MN. That same year, permission was granted to place boat racks on the beach of the YMCA camp in Hudson, Wisconsin. Membership dues from 12 people enabled the club to purchase 3 used boats.  The St. Croix Rowing Club was established. In 2002, the SCRC moved to its present location on the west end of St. Croix Street in Hudson. Renting the old Luebke Oil shed from the city and cutting the back end of the 20′ x 30′ pole building allowed the club to accommodate its fleet of boats.

Since its meager beginnings, the club has maintained a steady membership as our fleet has continued to grow.  The SCRC fleet now consists of 2 training singles, 2 racing singles, 2 doubles, and a quad.  In addition, many of our members have their own shells. The club has also participated in a variety of regattas over the years, from regional races like the Minneapolis Sprints and the NWIRA Regatta, to national and even international level competition.

The club is run by volunteers, including rotating elected leadership of a President, Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary, and Safety Officer.  Additionally the club has a board of directors, who along with the officers, provide guidance and policy for the club.
